Egypt announces dates for presidential election

National Election commission of Egypt has announced the dates of next presidential election in the country. Announcing the timeline in a press conference the commission said that presidential election will take place March 26-28 and the result will be declared on 2nd April 2018 if one of the candidates secured minimum 50% votes. If no candidate get the required 50% than run off will be held from April 24-26 and the result will be announced on May 1.

According to Al-Jazeera, so far two candidates have stated their intention to run for the post of president. Khalid Ali, A human rights lawyer, and Essam Heggey an Egyption space scientist are the two candidates in the fray till now. Current President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has not yet confirmed whether he will contest the election or not but he is widely expected to contest his second and final term.

El-Sisi was Egypt’s Army Chief who becomes president in 2013 after removing the elected president Mohamed Morsi of Muslim Brotherhood. The tenure of Mr Sisi as president has been very controversial and he has faced criticism from all over the world for the violation of human rights. It is estimated that 60,000 people have been imprisoned since the general came to power.

The country is also facing the Islamic insurgency in some regions and many deadly attack have killed dozens of citizens in Sinai region.
