New Delhi:Stating that they have failed to convince the Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, four of the five seniormost judges of the Supreme Court – Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph – said there was an immediate need to preserve the judiciary system in the country if democracy has to be protected. The press conference, a first of its kind for sitting judges of the Supreme Court, is being held at the residence of Justice Chelameswar.

Justice Chelameswar says, “We owe a responsibility to the institution and the nation. Our efforts have failed in convincing the Chief Justice to take steps to protect the institution.”There is an issue of assignment of a case which is raised in that letter (to CJI): Justice Ranjan Gogoi, on being asked further if it is about CBI Judge BH Loya, he said, ‘yes.’

We met CJI with a specific request which unfortunately couldn’t convince him that we were right therefore, we were left with no choice except to communicate it to the nation that please take care of the institution: Justice J.Chelameswar.Integrity of SC has taken a hit: Justice Chelameshwar to media | We have discharged our duty to the nation: Justice Ranjan Gogoi to media Nobody is breaking ranks, we are speaking for ourselves and we are the seniormost four: Justice Chelameshwar to media.

Four of us have been telling the CJI Dipak Misra to correct his ways for the sake of the institution, says Justice Chelameswar. “We have spotted things in the last few months. Tried to intervene but to no avail. Twenty years from now, the nation should not say we sold our souls. ”

“We tried to collectively tell the CJI that certain things in the administration of the SC is not in order. Unfortunately our efforts failed. So we are saying this before the nation,” he adds.
