Before our first Antiseptic cream appeared on the scene, the care of wounds was left to Turmeric (Locally known as HALDI). Done to a past in pestle and motor or on the numble guiding stone, turmeric was regularly used as dressing for wounds to prevent sepsis.

Ayurveda recognizes turmeric to be hot and pungent, thereby performing the same function as a hot water formention with an antiseptic added. Once the boil has burst turmeric acts as healing agents. It also helps bites and stings and workingbas a counter irritant bring great relief to a patient of Neuralgia.

Turmeric combined with Sandal wood and a little oil was the magic face mask used by the Beautician or Beauties of yester years to impact a golden glow on the skin. It is still used to beautify a bride on her wedding day. Members of the family liberally smear the brides faces, arms and legs with paste. There follows a break so that some what messy mixture has time to act before being washed off by a ritual bath, and the brides skin looks that much softer, clearer and lovelier.

Turmeric paste is known ro have a dipilatory and deodarant action. Applied to a face on a regular basis, it keeps acne at bay or if acne has struck, turmeric will reduce the severity of the attack. Used over a period of time it even cures acne. The juice of raw rhizome is used to treat many parasitic skin infections like ring worm and scabies.

As a spice, turmeric does more than impact colour to food. It enriches the flavour too. And it certainly aids the digestion by stimulating the action of the liver and promoting the secretion of bile. Ayurveda firmly holds turmeric to be an intestinal antiseptic, a finding which has been scientifically confirmed. Thus it rids the intestinal tract of harmful bacteria and purifies the blood.

HALDI is our first line of defence against the winter round cough, cold and flu. Haldi knows how to unclog a stuffy nose and bring relief to a blacked sinus. Take a rhizome of turmeric, place it on an earthen platter and set a match to one end of the rhizome, inhale deeply of a vapour. A repeat 2 or 3 times, within a few hours the cold will begin to run. The same can helo relieve the severity of an attack of Asthma.

A little known benefit of turmeric is that it helps relieve the symptoms in a case of conjunctivitis. Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in 2 cups of warm water, Strain through cloth. Use this solution to bathe the eyes, the irritation and redness will soon be reduced.

Turmeric powder is often added to bags of rice or wheat because it prevents infestation by worms and insects. But here is a word of caution; turmeric powder lands itself very easily to adulteration. And the commonest addictive is the highly injurious lead chromate.
